Spring/summer 2022 trends

As the spring season rolls around, the question on every fashion lover’s mind is simple; “what’s in season?” While trends are not nearly as important as learning to embrace your sense of style, finding micro-and macro-trends that you can make your own is something to look forward to each season. For this reason, I took the brief opportunity to compile a short 15 item list featuring the key trends for the upcoming season.

Spring/summer 2022 trends
  1. Feathers

Infinitely fun and certainly flirty the ‘extra’ trend of feathers galore has reached us all. While Fendi and Christan Cowan decidedly obsessed about the bolder birds, other brands went for a quieter route. So if you’re in the mood for feather-trimmed pajamas, Sleeper has created plenty of fun options and vintage coats can be found on Etsy and Poshmark easily.

2. Sequins

All that glitters is most certainly not gold this season. More likely the sparkes that are catching your eye isn’t cause for a new Goldrush, but rather the trend of sparkling sequins. Often found on fun jackets or an eccentric dress that is ready to herald in the new ’20s (or disco-loving ’70s that Tom Ford seemed to want to reminisce about) the flashy detail proved to be an ultimate nostalgia piece. Of course, Jenny Packham and Valentino both outdid themselves with glittering and party-ready dresses as well.

3. Fringe

Eclectic and fun, fringe has reached a new height in popularity as a spring fashion trend this year. The bohemian trend became highly popular at brands from Tods to Proenza Schouler who all bowed down before curtains of swinging fringe on their clothes.

Garments

4. Low rise jeans

Low-rise jeans are the Y2K trend that continues to make a resurgence. While I often fail to love this trend, many are seemingly already obsessed. Bella Hadid has been seen sporting the low-rise look (with a thong peeking out), along with the model, runways from Blumarine to Ulla Johnson have also brought back the look from the early aughts.

5. Mini skirts

The smaller, the better seemed to be a sentiment that ran throughout all the fashion weeks around the globe. At Prada, the mini skirt barely reached five inches in length and while Chanel and Miu Miu’s may have been a bit longer, the mini skirt has come back and entered the foray of fashion trends once more as an ultimate micro-skirt.

6. Maxi dresses

Floor trailing dresses that danced across the runways created an entrancing and ethereal look that certainly juxtaposed itself against micro-mini skirts. These long, loose looks quickly create a perfect outfit for a dinner party. So if you’re interested in entering the cottage-core perfect look head to Carolina Herrera or Badgley Mischka for your pick.

Accessories

7. Shoulder bags

Swap your micro bags and overly large totes this season for the street style look of shoulder bags. The highly popular Gabbi look from J.W Pei was intensely popular over the summer on social media, but this year there is no telling what shoulder bag will become the ultimate fashion statement.

8. Gold jewelry

Gold jewelry has been the peak of jewelry popularity for a few years now and while silver pulled a quick coup d’etat for the fall and winter of last year, it seems that this spring we are back to gold. Woven into the accessories categories of Fendi (and Fendance), Dolce & Gabbana and Marine Serre golden details proved to be the height of chic.

Prints

8. Plaids

The print so often placed upon the winter high ground, it seems that plaid prints have now moved over to the springtime with Chanel and Coach luring in the more winter look. Of course, MSGM couldn’t resist the urge of a playful pink gingham- and why not?- that plaid certainly screams spring fashion!

9. Florals

I know, I know, floral prints for spring aren’t exactly exciting. However, Jason Wu created a fun and dynamic new take on the fashion trend by creating abstract floral prints. This new fabric rolling process allows fresh flowers to imprint themselves on the fabric to create a natural and chaotic look. At Richard Quinn, though, floral patterns stuck to their classic place for spring with beautiful flowers blossoming on the clothes.

Colors

10. Pale pinks

When scrolling through Pantone’s released color list from NYFW and LFW a few weeks ago, I found that pale colors were a key ingredient for many shows. Pale pink proves to be the spice holding many collections in captivity- only subtly. So if you’re in the mood for some dreamy pink then head to Chanel, Altuzarra, or Rodarte for a dose of pink.

11. Baby blues

Along with pale pinks, baby blues cropped up again and again on the 2022 runways. Both Raf Simons and Moschino enjoyed playing with the color to create a flirty and nostalgic tone to their runways, but if you’re questioning whether or not to add it to your wardrobe- it’s already Cardi B approved!

12. Light greens

From Academy of New York to Badgley Mischka light greens have proven to be a popular tone on the New York and London fashion weeks. A tone of rejuvenation, the light hue often made its way to pantsuits for the office (because who doesn’t need a refresher there?)

Shoes

13. Mules

Sometimes considered ugly and other times cute, mules are a controversial shoe. Unlike clogs this shoe has the lovely choice of being either chunky or slim- something that made the shoe trend of spring 2022 fascinating was how many designers reached towards the chunky and eclectic style of the shoe. Mainly European brands, Versace, Givenchy, and Salvatore Ferragamo in most instances, found comfort in making a large step into 2022 with extra chunky clogs.

14. Platforms

You’re shocked? Don’t act shocked! Platforms have certainly been rising in popularity over the last few years, whether in the form of Doc Martens or the (infinitely popular and Instagram saturated) Versace pumps we’re all adoring. However, platforms from any designer and any brand have taken both street style and runway fashion by storm with stars spotted in the 2022 shoe trend, along with it featured in many fashion shows during September.
